Adding a Window to a Wall with Unfinished Drywall

Howdy!

Last week, I was tasked with adding a window to a recently drywalled wall. The buyers wanted it to be the same as the one on the other side of the wall—2860.

We started by removing all the screws and pushing in the nails where we would add the window. We gave ourselves room to work by cutting the drywall an extra stud away from where the new window would be framed. We used our oscillating tool to get a clean cut of the drywall at the center of the stud so we could install new drywall with screws at the ends. Then, we cut and pulled out the insulation in big chunks to reinstall it later. We made our header and installed new studs to frame the window. We kept the stud a few inches from the corner of the wall to be the right side of the window and avoided taking out the stud. I installed the drywall using some of the old pieces and some new ones.

I cut out the OSB sheathing before putting drywall on the window’s interior for an easy, clean cut. After adding this drywall, the tape and mud guys could finish the window with corner beads, joint compound, and texture. Lastly, we re-nailed the sheathing on the outside to the newly framed window.

Building is easy.
